This house was originally built in 1854 by a Quaker named Eli Hawkins, and had been remodeled in the 1980s in a post-modern style.

We were approached to design an addition. The owners requested a master suite with a private deck to the outside. We found that the requirements could be met within the existing walls.

The 1980s remodeling created a guest suite connected to the stone portion of the house by a hall. The owners agreed to turn the guest suite into the master suite, moving the guest quarters into the second floor of the main house. We pushed the walls of the hall out 12” on each side to create space for bookcases, eliminated the steps, and created ramps to provide accessibility to the master suite, turning the hall into a library. We returned the details to respect the mid 19th century spirit of the building.

We designed the building to be accessible on the first floor.and designed access ramps to the porches to be built as needed.
